Success Story of Mi (Xiaomi)



Lei jun is the founder of Mi. He was born on 16 December 1969 in Xiantao, Hubai, China. He spent his childhood in an industrial area named Wuhan. He graduated from a university of Wuhan in 1991 in computer science. During his time at the university, he read a book about Mr. Steve Jobs, he was so impressed with that book. That he wanted to establish his own first class business.


After completing his studies, Lei began working as an engineer in 1992 in a Chinese software company Kingsoft. Kingsoft has its own word processing, antivirus, software, gaming distribution and ecommerce etc. Lei jun became the CEO of this company in 1998. He created a website for selling this book of himself, named Joyo.com. Their website Joyo.com had grown so big in four years, that in 2004 Amazon com bought it in 75 million.


In 2007, Lei Jun resigned from the CEO post of Kingsoft. Lei became vice president of Kingsoft. Soon after, they invested in Vancl.com and UCWeb. Lei founded Xiaomi Inc in 2010.


In the next three months after aggressive hardwork, Xiaomi launched its first Android-based firmware, based on the name MIUI firmware. Soon after, a year later in August 2011, the company also announced its first smartphone - 'Xiaomi Mi1 year. This smartphone will be sent using MIUI firmware. And the next version in line was the Xiaomi Mi2 smartphone. The Mi2 was powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro and it was announced in the following year.


In 2013, the company took another big step and hired the Vice President of Product Management for Google Android for Hugo Barra. They were included in the board as their new vice president to expand the company outside mainland China. He was in charge of Xiaomi's Global Division for managing all the company's products and operations in markets outside Mainland China. This year also saw some other developments. It included the launch of their new Smart TV. After this, his new and instant 3version - Mi3 phone was launched. By the end of this year, Xiaomi had become the fifth most used smartphone brand in China.



In 2014, Xiaomi entered the market by joining India's biggest e-commerce site - Flipkart. His influence in India was such that they were sold in the first 24 seconds. They sold a total of 40,000 smartphones. This is when the company decided to expand rapidly in India and eventually also shared with other e-commerce leaders like Amazon.com and Snapdeal.


Since its launch in just 5 years, Xiaomi has become the world's fourth largest smartphone manufacturer, now designing, developing and selling smartphones, mobile apps and related consumer electronics.


Some of their products include Mi Series, Redmi Series, MIUI, MiWiFi, MiTV, MiBox, MiCloud, MiTalk, MiPower Bank, Mi Band, and many other types of products.
